Chennai rains of light to moderate intensity to continue

Chennai has been witnessing light rains since past few days. However, in the last 24 hours, the Detroit of Asia has recorded moderate showers.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 27 mm of rains, whereas the Minambakkam Observatory failed to observe any rain activity.

The reason for these rains can be attributed to a north south trough that is extending from Telangana to Coastal Tamil Nadu.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, the automobile capital of India will continue to receive light to moderate showers. Meanwhile, the northern parts of Tamil Nadu may record moderate rains while the southern districts will receive scattered light showers.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, the other districts of Tamil Nadu that witnessed rains include Nagapattinam 15 mm, Vellore 14 mm, Coonoor 8 mm, Kodaikanal 6 mm and Karaikal 3 mm.
So far Chennai has recorded a total of 130.8 mm of rains as against its monthly mean of 126.8 mm. It is evident that the city has already surpassed its monthly average rainfall.

Tamil Nadu including Chennai does not record much significant rains during Southwest Monsoon as it lies in a rain shadow area. The state receives good sum of rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon.
