It is likely that the Chennai division of Southern Railways will kick-start 12-car electrical multiple unit trains during the start of next year. After successful completion of 5th and 6th lines along the Chennai Central to Basin Bridge, there have been delay in functioning of suburban trains between Moore Market Complex towards norther and western parts.
Because of congestion at the Chennai Central, suburban trains ta Basin Bridge Stations were detailed for a few minutes. This had irked all office-goers. With betterment in functioning, travelers believed to have better railway services. Now, as a move to cope with the commuter population along the western section, 12-car rakes are likely to be introduced same as the EMUs functional along Chennai Beach to Tambaram section.
According to a senior official from the southern railways, it is understood that they have proposed introduction of 12-car coaches along the MMC-Avadi section. However, because of inadequate platform space in a few stations for housing these 12-car trains, the introduction was not done.
Works likely to begin soon
The necessary works to increase platform lengths are currently being done at MMC railway station and Perambur Loco works.
