It has become mandatory for link SIM card with Aadhar. The deadline for linking is February 2018 failing which your SIM card will get deactivated.

There may be 2 different scenarios in this case. First is that you are linking it for the very first time. The next is that you have got your phone number changed and seek to include Aadhar information by removing old number and adding the new one. So, the steps for linking SIM card with Aadhar are as follows:

In case you are linking your mobile number with Aadhar for the first time, you will have to get it done offline. For almost all kinds of online transaction, OTP or One-Time-Password is mandatory which means your registered mobile number will be sent with an SMS carrying the OTP. So, it is not possible to link your Aadhar with SIM card online when you do it for the first time.

Hence, for offline linking, the steps are as follows
Approach the closest Aadhar centre for updating Aadhar or correction form or download it out of UIDAI website.
Fully fill the form and submit it to the authority there at the centre. Make sure to mention on the form that it is to update the mobile number. Along with the form, attach a photocopy of Aadhar card and any ID proof such as PAN card, Passport, Election ID, etc.

Once this is done, biometrics verification will be done at the enrollment centre. Thumb impression will then be verified. At the time of Aadhar card application and new application processing, your biometrics would have got recorded. This verification process is to authenticate these changes. Once biometrics is verified, an acknowledgment slip will be given to you. This may take about 2 to 5 working days for getting updated. The UIDAI website says this may take up to 10-day time though.

Procedure to update mobile number
It is possible to update mobile number online. However, the existing mobile number should have already got linked with the Aadhar and it has to be functional and handy for making the online update, as you will receive OTP for authentication. So, you will have to get your mobile number and Aadhar linked upon providing the OTP sent to your old mobile number.

You have an option called Aadhar Update in the UIDAI website. Here, there is an option called Aadhar Self-Service Portal. You may feed the Aadhar number here and the Captcha text and place your request for OTP. You will then receive the OTP to your old mobile number which is in use. Upon submitting, you will be taken to a new page. Here, all the desired details can be updated. Click on Mobile Number under Selected Fields, and feed your newly got mobile number.
