Puducherry-Ministers sensational order banning polythene bag usage

The Environment Minister of the Puducherry Government, Kandasamy informed that the government has taken a new initiative to manufacture alternative carry-bags through the Women’s Self-help Groups using the latest American technology. Further, the manufacture and import of polythene bags are banned.

A review and analysis meeting regarding the pollution and other effects of plastic wastes was conducted in the office of the minister for environment in the Assembly building.

After the review meeting with the officials, the minister had a session with the press reporters informed that despite the strict government order banning the plastic carry-bags, many food shops, vegetable shops, and grocery shops continue using the polythene bags of less than 500 microns. Henceforth, polythenes bags of less than 50 microns must not be either manufactured or used. Especially, the white polythene bags are used for packing hot food items like biriyani. This may cause harmful effects such as the possibility of cancer.

So, the small and large food shops and hotels must not use these polythene bags. The officials from the Food Department will make periodical checks in all these establishments. If it is found that this government order has been violated, stringent legal action will be taken immediately.

There is a recent trend to use these polythene leaves even in occasions like weddings This must be stopped and the using plantain leaves must be reverted.The usage of polythene bags less than 50 microns will be entirely eliminated within the next 6 months.

The public must start using either cloth or paper carry-bags instead of the polythene bags.The women’s Self-help Groups will be encouraged to manufacture alternative bags with the latest technology from the USA – the government will offer subsidies and also provide the necessary training in this regard.
