Rain in Chennai has been recording light to moderate rains for the last few days. In fact, in span of last 24 hours, the state capital saw moderate showers to the tune of 17 mm.
Further, weathermen are of view that weather conditions will remain favourable for scattered rains to continue for the next few days. With this, mornings and nights will be pleasant but days will be warm and humid.
According to Skymet Weather, cyclonic circulation is prevailing over Coastal Andhra Pradesh. A trough is also extending from this system up to North Kerala. With this, humid winds from Bay of Bengal have been reaching over the region.
With this, few good spells of rain are likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
Slowly and steadily, Chennai along with Tamil Nadu is marching towards the Northeast Monsoon. “This is the transition period from Southwest to Northeast Monsoon. With this, we expect gradual increase in rain intensity in the coming days,” said Mahesh Palawat, Vice President- Meteorology, Skymet Weather.
The ongoing Southwest Monsoon officially ends on September 30. This is followed by Northeast Monsoon that usually sets in over Tamil Nadu by third week of October.
Northeast Monsoon is a three-month long season, that officially begins on October 1. Tamil Nadu including Chennai records majority of the its annual rainfall during this season. In fact, Chennai records more than 60% of its rainfall during this time.
November is the rainiest month of Chennai, with city recording normal average rainfall of 374.4 mm.
Although this season, Chennai has already has recorded exceptionally good rainfall during Southwest Monsoon, which is quite unlikely. The cumulative rainfall for Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry from the period of June 1 to September 29 is excess by 33%.
