On the occasion of the Vijayadasami festival, many parents visited the Ayyappan temples on the admission of their children in schools for the 1st time. They conducted special prayers for this purpose and made the fresh students write on rice.
It is an age-old traditional belief what task is undertaken and initiated on Vijayadasami day will be immensely successful. So, many important events such as admitting the child in the school for the 1st time or starting a new business venture are undertaken on Vijayadasami day.
On this occasion, hundreds of parents visited the Ayyappan temple in Mahalingapuram, Nungambakkam from the very early mornings along with their family and children. Praying to the Lord that he should bless the child for a propitious and successful educational career, they made their children write on rice spread on a plate. After this, the names of the children were written on their tongues with rice.
As this temple is hugely popular, there was an unending stream of parents visiting. After this prayer, the children would be taken to the schools for admission.
The event of ‘Vidhyaranbham’ (beginning of education) was conducted in the temples in Nagerkoil in Kanyakumari district on the occasion of Vijayadasami.
Here also, the parents came with their children, prayed, and made the kids write on rice spread on the plates. In order for highly proficient and quality education for the children, letters were written on their tongues with a golden needle while the mantras were being chanted.
Meanwhile, the parents who brought their children to the temple of Goddess Saraswathi (Goddess of Education) – known as ‘Kalaivani Temple’, for praying and making the kids write on the plates spread with rice and turmeric.
