About 10 years ago, the State government had said that it has got plans to construct second airport in Chennai at Sriperumbudur.

Following this, the phase-1 modernization of the Chennai airport. After a few years of saturating the phase-2 project is now likely to begin in a few months. However, the concrete proposal for this second airport in the city is still awaited. There is increasing traffic growth here.

Recently, the importance of having a Greenfield airport in the city was articulated by Jayant Sinha, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation.

In the recent times, the only development made is that the second airport is not going to be in Sriperumbudur. The State is eyeing on the remaining four cities – Walajabad and Madhurantakam from Kanchipuram district, and Alamathy and Gummidipoondi from Tiruvallur district.

According to Airports Authority of India sources, they are looking for an alternate land location due to availability of land. Following the initial announcement, there is not much progress with the progress. There however has been several developmental measures taken. Further, the lands available are not together. A few land areas are available and they are far between. Acquiring the remaining land is going to be very difficult.
