Traffic congestion continue as Velachery bypass works go on

It was likely that the Velachery Flyover construction would get completed by September 2018. Though works are said to continue as per schedule, there are continuous traffic woes complaining about traffic congestion, causing tough time for passengers of three arterial roads in Velachery.

The time taken to cross the stretch between Vijayanagar junction and Taramani is stretched, blame commuters. Last year, construction of second flyover kick-started. However, the officials are discussing with the transport department to shift the bus terminus temporarily so as to streamline bus traffic.

State highway officials said about 40 percent of the project is completed and the traffic flow is reduced with diversion of traffic. Hence, nowadays, the situation is better than before.

A few years ago, there used to be peak hour congestion on Velachery bypass. This is not the case now. We are closely functioning with the transport department to divert bus movement. One of the options we have is to shift the Velachery bus terminus close to MRTS station or Chennai silks. The department is however considering the option and the final call is awaited, an official said.

The main reason for traffic on 100 feet road and the junction is due to the buses that pass from Velachery Bypass Road to Taramani, through LIC colony. The pathetic condition of LIC Colony remains the same. There are a number of Metropolitan Transport Corporation Buses in this route regularly.

Traveling in this route is difficult. It takes at least half an hour to pass through Vijayanagar junction and reach SRP Tools during peak hours, say nearby residents.
