Book railway tickets online and save bucks because the government is now avid about withdrawing MDR or Merchant Discount Rates imposed on e-tickets.

On all tickets booked online using IRCTC website, MDR charges are imposed. This charge is added by the banks on merchants for their debit or credit card services. Discussion with banks in this regard are taking place, said Piyush Goyal, the Railway Minister.

In a recent interview, the Minister said railways usually imposes service charge. After demonetization, the service charge is withdrawn following which we observe soar in digital transactions. So, at present, Merchant Discount Rate is the only additional charge imposed, he said adding that he is in talks with the bankers to figure out the best possible way of getting rid of MDR as well.

Once MDR is withdrawn, ticket rates would come down for all passenger bookings done online.

In less than 12 months, over a million job offers can be introduced in railways. In the existing projects with the railways, if the existing amount of investment is made, about 2 to 2.5 lakh jobs can be created, said the minister.

Further, the minister added that the growth narrative is likely to be altered by driving it with technology. Empowering people is the main aspect that can bring forth a change, he added.
