It’s monsoon now – the time for mosquitoes to throng in to our homes. Due to the semi-tropical, temperate climate, we have the mosquitoes prevalent throughout the year. Especially, at night, these keep humming near our ears!
Apart from their bites, these insects are one of the most annoying! These can be dangerous too, as they cause fatal illness and diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya. We luckily have a number of preventive methods to keep them at bay. We can make use of them during their peak breeding period which is the monsoon time. So, below are some of the methods that you can practice to keep your home free from mosquitoes.
Mesh layers
The best option to keep your home protected is the use of mesh layers in doors and windows. Just add a sliding or swinging door attached with mesh to keep all the entrances secured without taking any compromise on ventilation and natural light. Further, you limit the direct contact with outside air by introducing mesh. Every time you open the door for a calling bell rung, you do not pave way for any mosquito to enter.
No stagnant water
The most prominent breeding space for mosquitoes is stagnant water. Apart from breeding over it, these mosquitoes even breed inside them. Make sure to remove all the stagnant water in tanks and buckets, or properly close them. Make it a practice to regularly drain the excessive water from flower pots. Do not allow water to remain for long. If you are using air coolers, keep changing them regularly. In toilets, flush stagnant water often. Make sure to keep the WC unit enclosed always.
Repellents may help too
Identify harmless mosquito repellent crams. There are several repellent machines available with liquid refills. This is one of the most preferred options for people. When you find too many mosquitoes, you may turn them on to kill them, or drive them out of the room.
However, keep in mind that these may be toxic in nature. So, it is necessary for you to choose non-toxic ones that are safe to use even when children and aged persons are around.
Plants can help too
To keep mosquitoes at bay, you can grow plants like citronella, catnip, etc in your balcony or entrance verandah. Apart from help you combat the mosquito population, you can also enjoy the blissful smell of the plants and feel refreshing and relishing.
In addition to being simple, the above mentioned methods are very effective. Make use of these methods and keep your family safe from the wide-spreading diseases like dengue and other kinds of mosquito-borne illness.
