Following many hurdles, along Anna Salai, the tunneling work for Chennai Metro Rail is about to wrap up.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited officials say there were two tunnel boring machines involved in the work at Government Estate of which one of them will soon reach the final destination in another few days. This is AG-DMS.

On this stretch, works to lay tracks will soon begin. Cross passage construction and other works for signaling and electrical works will also get wrapped up soon. This cross passage is the path that passengers can make use of in case of emergency in the tunnel.

For the completion of next tunnel and reach AG-DMS destination, one more month may be needed.

Tunneling works from Government Estate began about 5 years ago. The tunneling and station works are being carried out by Gammon India and Russian partner Mosmetrostroy.

Due to financial crisis, the project was abandoned by Mosmetrostroy in May 2015. Later, CMRL ceased the Gammon India contract following which the project was given to Afcons Infrastructure Limited.

By the end of next year, this stretch will probably get opened for public usage.
