For setting up Tamil Chair at Harvard University in the US, the Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned a total of Rs. 10 crore. This is a major move to research and preservation of Tamil language.

On Friday, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi Palaniswami has made this announcement mentioning that 2 Tamilians from the United States came up with a request in this regard to the former Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha. For this, she had agreed to include funding as a part of the poll promises made in 2016.

He further added that he has ordered to grant a sum of Rs. 10 crore on behalf of TN government that functions in the footsteps of Amma (Jayalalitha), as a move to set up Tamil Chair at Harvard University and make the poll time promise a reality, said Palaniswami in his statement given to a media.

On establishing the chair, it is believed that it would allow focus on Tamil language and the Tamil rulers’ history all over the world, the literature of Tamil language and digitization of palm manuscripts. About 6 PhD scholars will be funded at a time for performing the research.

Thus, Tamil will thus join the club of 6 classic languages including Hebrew, Chinese, Latin, Greek, Persian and Sanskrit all of which have got an exclusive chair at the Harvard University. Tamil is not the solo language apart from Sanskrit to have got allowed at the Harvard University chair. Furthermore, it adds accolades that apart from Chinese, Tamil is only living language to receive the honor, says K. Pandiarajan, the Tamil Nadu development minister.
