With the recent onset of the northeast monsoon rainy season in Tamil Nadu, TANGEDCO has taken up an intensive awareness campaign for the public regarding prevention of electricity-related accidents.

15 preventive actions to avoid electricity-related accidents:
  • When cutting off the branches of trees or the trees located near the electric equipment/cable/overhead lines, please inform the nearest EB office before commencing the same.
  • Do not go near the areas are where transformers, distribution pillar-boxes, and strung electric wires are located.
  • If an electric shock is felt with any electrical gadget, wear a rubber footwear and switch off the house electricity main switch. Inform EB office immediately.
  • Avoid standing or walking in the water-stagnated areas.
  • Never dry clothes by tying the ropes to the electric pole or wires. Ensure that no switches are set up in the wet zones within the house.
  • If there is lightning or thunder, seek shelter in a low area away from electric poles, transformers, and the metal conducting wires.
  • It is advisable to avoid using electric gadgets such as TV, mixie, grinders, and computer during the moments of lightning/thunder. In case you locate cut electricity wires lying on the road/street, do not touch or step on them. Inform the nearest EB office immediately.
  • The buildings are to be constructed to allow sufficient gap in space between the cable/wire route and the buildings. When getting a connection for electric power exceeding 5 kilowatts, ensure that an earth-leakage circuit-breaker is fixed.
  • Never use the electricity pole to set up as a support for erecting a ‘pandhal’ or never use them to hang banners/posters.
  • Never load or unload goods from the heavy-duty vehicles parked near electric poles or transformers.
  • Do not stand near the open window or door during moments of lighting or thunder.
  • Do not operate switches with a wet hand.
  • Do not tie cattle on the electric pillars/poles.
  • Ensure all plug points to be 3-way points, including the earth connection.
  • Do not try to douse the fire due to electricity-related causes by dousing water.
