Northeast Monsoon is in its active form and has been lashing Tamil Nadu including Chennai with heavy rain. Three digit rains have been recorded at several stations of Tamil Nadu. As per Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation persists over southwest Bay of Bengal off South Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Another cyclonic circulation can be marked over Lakshadweep and Kerala.
Presently, moderate to strong intensity winds from the Bay of Bengal are increasing moisture over parts of the state. These combined weather systems have been leading to hefty showers across the city. It is anticipated that the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu such as Cuddalore, Parangipettai, Karaikal, and Thanjavur are likely to witness moderate to heavy with isolated very heavy rains.
However, the intensity of showers will be less as compared to the coastal stations as the moisture incursion is more over the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. The sky conditions will remain cloudy across the state and the weather will be comfortable.
The mercury levels have reduced significantly and are likely to reduce more. In the span of 24 hours, Chennai witnessed heavy rain to the tune of 116 mm, Cuddalore 140 mm, Parangipettai 263 mm and Karaikal 142 mm.
In the same span of time, Thanjavur recorded 39 mm of rain, Atirampattinam 49 mm and Tondi 14 mm of rain. As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, a Low-Pressure area will form over the south-central Bay of Bengal and initially, it will move towards Tamil Nadu Coast leading to increase in rain intensity over north-coast of Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
We expect heavy rain and thundershower on November 6 and 7, thereafter rain intensity will gradually reduce as the weather system will move in a northwest direction away from Tamil Nadu. These hefty showers will lead to massive stretches of waterlogging and chaotic conditions across Chennai.
As per media reports, due to intense rains, one has been reported dead in Thanjavur. Schools have also been shut in some districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
