Chitlapakkam Lake is a reservoir spread across a land area of 86.86 acres or 37.83 lakh sq. ft. Its main source of water is rain and supply from Pachai Malai Hills

In the past, the location of Chitlapakkam Lake was Agricultural in nature. Back in 2003, the height of the lake was increased by 10 feet and the storage capacity was raised.

Owing to poor underground drainage system in the residential areas nearby, the drainage water and sewage ejected out of the commercial establishments lying in and around the GST road would contaminate the lake.

Since a long time, for years, the wastage dump yard is located close to the lake. There were plans to improve the lake at a cost of Rs 45 lakh on the whole. The fund is split into Rs 15 lakh from the public and Rs 30 lakh from the state government.

It was in February 2013 that the works to set up a 750m pathway, a garden and boating facilities were set up around the lake at an overall cost of Rs. 45 lakh were started.
