Salt, veggies to be priced high next year due to incessant rains

Traders in Koyambedu wholesale market state that production of salt in Nagapattinam and vegetable cultivation in the western districts are badly hit due to incessant rain showers in coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. Since last month, there is reduced procurement of veggies, especially tomatoes, lady’s finger and beans. There is about 20 to 40 percent hike in prices, says one of the wholesale traders in Koyambedu.

The bad weather prove to be challenging to the farmers of western and northern districts as well.

Vans and autos spurn deliveries to low-lying areas
Due to severe water stagnation in different places, small vans and autos avoid delivering products to taking low lying areas which furthermore hinders arrival of veggies from Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.

What’s the status?
  • In the next year, it is very likely that the prices of spices and salt will be increased. To note, salt production in Vedaranyam is already hit. In general, salt production is usually suspended in peak summer and peak winter. Along the Vedaranyam coast, production of salt across over 10,000 acres is badly hit
  • Rains have also affected pepper production in Kerala and Karnataka
  • If heavy rains continue in delta regions, rice, pulses and other essential commodities shall also be increased in price next year
