Heavy Chennai rains had been wreaking havoc over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Almost a week’s rain has caused massive chaos over the city. However, the past two days have been good enough for the city as heavy rains have taken a backseat.
The last 24 hours have also been similar and only light rains with isolated moderate showers have been recorded over the region. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Minambakkam observatory recorded 15 mm of while only 7 mm of rainfall was seen over the Nungambakkam observatory.
Since the morning hours, on and off light rains and drizzle have been occurring over the city. Also, occasional thunderclouds have been developing in and around Chennai giving short spells of intense rains. However, these rains are localized in nature and heavy showers are not expected today.
The low-pressure area which was persisting over South Coastal Tamil Nadu has weakened and now lies as a trough of low over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Sri Lanka. Thus, its impact has reduced significantly over the region. This trough of low is also gradually weakening which is why Chennai rains will reduce significantly.
Now, only light rains with short spells of moderate rain in isolated pockets will continue for another 24 hours. Thereafter, dry weather is expected to take over and the residents will heave a sigh of relief. The weather will remain almost dry for a long time and rains will only make a comeback around November 12-13.
