It was in the year 1964 that the Central Vigilance Commission was set up as an apex Indian governmental body. This is aimed at addressing governmental corruption. It is an autonomous body that does not come under the control of any executive authority,
The body offers advice to the various central government organizations to plan, execute, review and reform their vigilance works.
As per the recommendations of the Committee of Prevention of Corruption, the government of India set up the body in February 1964. It was headed by Shri K. Santhanam for providing advice and guidance to the central government agencies. The very first chief vigilance commissioner of India was Nittoor Srinivasa Rau.
In the annual report of the CVC, there are details of the works done by the body and also the system failures that give rise to corruption in various government departments, organizations, different kinds of preventive measures, etc.
The commission includes
- Chairperson – a Central Vigilance Commissioner
- Members – up to 2 vigilance commissioners
Mr. K.V. Chowdary serves as the present vigilance commissioner. The other two vigilance commissioners are Mr. Rajiv – the former Director General of CISF and Shri T.M. Bhasin.
