Chennai Rains have been wreaking havoc over the region since the beginning of the month of November. So much so that three digit rainfall was witnessed over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. However, these rainfall activities did take a backseat and dry days made a comeback over the state capital.

Meanwhile, during the last few days, light rains had been making appearances over the city of Chennai, but heavy showers were completely ruled out. However, the ever notorious Chennai rains have once again made a comeback and last night was proof of it.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, the Nungambakkam observatory in Chennai recorded a whopping 66 mm of rainfall out of which 65 mm of rainfall was recorded during the night time. On the other hand, Meenambakkam observatory saw 25 mm of rainfall during the same time frame.

In view of these rains, schools in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Trivallur have been declared as closed.

These rainfall activities are attributed to the low pressure area which is over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast. An associated cyclonic circulation is extending up to 7.6 km. The system is expected to become more marked during the next 24 hours.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, Chennai will witness light rainfall activities during the next few hours in the day time.

However, the intensity of rains is expected to pick up pace during the late evening and night hours. Thus, moderate to heavy rainfall activity may make an appearance over the city of Chennai for another 24 to 48 hours.
