Just the way Kerala has Karimeen, the state of Tamil Nadu has Ayirai Meen. Likewise, similar to making Karimeen in Kerala, TN is likely to officially announce Ayirai Meen as the state fish, say recent reports.

The required formalities are being discussed with the Director of Fisheries and other higher officials. In Kerala, Karimeen is already declared as the state fish, and in Telangana, Murrel holds the pride, says Dr. S Felix, the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University.

Ayirai is a freshwater fish that is rich in nutritional values. It is priced of the range Rs 1200 to Rs 1500 per kg.

The Centre is said to have advised all states to choose their respective official fish species, said Felix, adding that fishes cultivated in pond culture have got excellent potential.

There is excellent commercial value to the fish. Finance Secretary K Shanmugam said he is avid about developing fish cultivation techniques. In fact, the necessary works to run research centers at Madhavaram in Chennai and Parakkai in Kanniyakumari district are also taking place at present.
