Blindness of 80% can be avoided

For eliminating blindness doctors conference was held ‘Media and its role in eliminating blindness’ on Monday.they added in that In­d­ia was home to the largest number of blind in the world with 12 million blind people and 80 per cent of it was avoidable. Social barriers and misconceptions are the biggest obstacles in staving off blindness,but it is curable.lack of awareness paves the way for leading cause of avoidable blindness is cataract. And other  health problems.

To create better awareness among the public through media, Vis­i­on 2020: The Right to Sight – India, an NGO, in collaboration with National Pro­g­ramme for Preven­ti­on of Blindness, Union min­i­stry of health and family welfare held a day-long programme at  Shankar Nethralaya. Dr S.S. Badrinath, fou­n­d­er of Shankara Nethra­laya said at the function.the chief doctor said that lack of the media to reach out to a wider audience. Experts gathered at the programme said that most of the vision problems we­re avoidable but went undetected due to various mi­sconceptions, myths and social barriers.
