Get ready, as Ockhi Cyclone is all set to bring heavy downpour across southern Tamil Nadu in the next 36 hours. Ockhi is a Bengali name meaning eye.
 
It was back in the year 2000 that the tropical cyclone naming system was introduced by the organizations – World Meteorological Organization, and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. The system of naming was introduced with the aim of making things easy and comfortable for forecasters, weathermen and the common people in understanding, identifying and alerting about the cyclones and weather conditions.

The Indian Meteorological Department takes care of naming the cyclones along North Indian Ocean basin. It was back in 2004 that the IMD named a tropical cyclone for the first time. It was given the name Onil, as named by Bangladesh.
 
Eight names are sourced from each of the 8 north Indian Ocean countries including Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Oman, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand and Maldives. These names are combined into a comprehensive list of 64 names. When there is a need to name a cyclone, one name from this list will be picked.
 
Mora – the previous storm which caused flooding along northeast India in May month is a name suggested by Thailand. Mora indicates a healing stone, or star of the sea. If a cyclone occurs next, it will be named Sagar.
