Severe Cyclone Ockhi continues to strangle Lakshadweep with torrential rains

Season’s first Cyclonic Storm, Ockhi that has already throttled parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu continues to unleash torrential rains over Lakshadweep. The weather system has already upgraded itself into a very severe Cyclonic Storm and is expected to intensify further in the next 24 hours.
At present, the weather system is over Lakshadweep and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea, approx. 230 km west-northwest of Minicoy and 215 km south of Amini Divi. As per Skymet Weather, the very severe cyclonic storm Ockhi is expected to strengthen further while its journey towards north-northwest direction across North Lakshadweep Islands.
In the wake of this, Lakshadweep Islands are expected to witness incessant rains along with strong gusty winds. Along with torrential showers, squally winds at a speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph are also expected to lash the chain of Islands. Therefore, Lakshadweep can brace for damages to property as well.
These heavy to extremely heavy rains are expected to continue for at least another 24 hours. Due to strong storm surge, low lying areas may even get flooded. As the sea area is likely to remain rough, fishermen are advised to stay away from the coast and not to venture into the sea. After 24 hours, the intensity is expected to reduce and the weather system is likely to recurve northeastwards in the subsequent 48 hours.
The very severe Cyclone Ockhi has reportedly claimed dozens of lives in Kerala and Tamil Nadu and has paralyzed most parts of the states with power outages and communication barriers.
