Chennai rains to revive, good showers ahead from December 19-21

For the last many days, Chennai rains have remained on backfoot. Blame it all on the absence of any significant weather system over or around the region. This had also kept Northeast Monsoon subdued.

With no rains, mercury had also increased leading to warm and humid weather conditions over the state capital. However, rains are all set to make a comeback very soon.

According to Skymet Weather, an upper air trough has been prevailing South Bay of Bengal, which is now likely to shift westwards. This shift would strengthen the easterly winds blowing over the city, resulting in rains.

As per weathermen, weather would remain dry till December 18, with partly cloudy sky conditions. Thereafter, by December 19, light rains are likely to commence over Chennai and nearby areas. Sky conditions are likely to be cloudy to overcast.

We expect slight increase in intensity by December 20 and some light to moderate rains and thundershowers may lash the city on December 20-21.

These rains would also restrict the rise in maximum and minimum temperatures, Mercury would start decreasing by December 20 but high humidity levels would prevail.

So far, the city has recorded 66 mm of rains as compared to its monthly average rainfall of 177.4 mm. However, over 13 days in hand for Monsoon season to get over, we are quite hopeful that city would be able to surpass the above mentioned figure.

Northeast Monsoon has been a good season for the entire Tamil Nadu, as the state is witnessing normal rains till now. In fact, during the Southwest Monsoon, wherein the state does not record much rainfall, also ended on surplus note, with 31% excess rainfall.
