The ‘praayachitha Abhishekham’ (atonement offering) was conducted at the famous Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar temple at the temple top where the sacred Karthigai Deepam was lit.
The ardent devotees regard the holy mountain of 14 km circumference as an embodiment of Lord Siva and worship it as well. On the occasion of the thiruk kaarthigai Deepam festival on 2nd December, The sacred lamp was lit on the top of the mountain of 2668’.
The lamp remained lit and burning for 11 days. As the devotees deem the mountain as an embodiment of Lord Siva and worship it, the devotees went up to the top of the mountain to have the holy Darshan of the lamp or ‘Deepam’
The ‘Praayachitha Pooja’ (atonement offering for having climbed the mountain) was performed yesterday (Wednesday, 2oth December).
On this occasion, in the Thiruvannamalai temple, the Sivacharyas commenced the chanting of Veda Mantras at 10.00 AM and a special ‘Yagasalai Pooja’ was performed.
The sacred water after the pooja was taken to the mountaintop and was poured on the feet of the deity at the mountaintop and thus, ‘Praayachitha Abhishekham’ was performed.
