All the self-financing and government-aided institutions ought to get registered with the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, as the Directorate of College Education has ordered to do so in a recent circular rolled out to all colleges.

This is a move in order to push its initiative for setting up a rating framework for higher education institutions.

A complete data of all institutions is being prepared. Earlier, it was just a paper and pen work. Now, it is not so. Things are made online and we have set a specific time schedule for applying, said the Principal of Bharathidhasan University.

All the universities need to provide subject-wise data of each and every department across universities. Officials say, the strength of every university needs to be studied.

There is a total of 13 universities that fall under the higher education department. Out of this, 9 of them have applied for NIFR. The deadline for applying was 15th December.

The Open University and Teacher Education University are not included in the ranking system. Mother Teresa and Tiruvallur University are unable to apply because they have lesser than 1000 students in their campus.

The institutions get judged with 5 different parameters. There are 21 total sub-classifications that these 5 are classified into.

The Secretary of Higher Education, Sunil Paliwal said that they have asked all the Universities to fill up NIRF forms even if they are not qualified for the ranking system. We are intending to set up a state-level rating framework, he added.

H index

Usually, the Universities are rated based on H-index. What is H index? It is a factor that determines the productivity and citation impact of works done by scientists in specialization.

This will facilitate the Vice-Chancellor to comprehend with the performance of the department.
