The Ministry of Railways is exploring the possibility of raising the train fare for the trains operated during festive occasions.

The railway officials shared the information regarding this proposal – The central Railway Minister Piyush Goel participated in a meeting with the senior Railway officials. During the meeting, the issue of raising the train fares during the festive seasons was discussed in detail. People are delighted in undertaking train journeys during the festive seasons.

A suggestion was made that the train fares during the festive seasons may be increased according to the demand and at the same time, discounts may be offered to the passengers who travel in less-travelled routes.

Generally, the passengers tend to avoid travelling in trains which reach their destinations between 12.00 midnight and 4.00 AM. Similarly, they tend to avoid the trains that reach their destinations between 1.30 PM and 5.00 PM.

Regarding the above trend, a suggestion was made that for the passengers who travelled in such trains referred above, some token discount of 10-30% may be offered. The suggestion of increasing train fares by 10-20% during the festive seasons was discussed. Some suggested that when there is an extra demand and additional passengers travel on specific trains, the fares may be increased for those trains.

Another suggestion was that the rise in fares may be decided on the basis of the travel time saved by the passengers.
