With the double intention of attracting the public and earning more revenue, it has been planned to set up malls in the Chennai Metro Railway Stations. The activities for this project is set to commence shortly.
Presently, around 30000 passengers travel daily in the Metro Rail. There is a 20% increase in the number of passengers during the weekend and festival holidays.
CMRL has taken up various initiatives to attract the public to earn more revenue. Setting up malls in the Metro stations is one of the initiatives taken by CMRL.
The CMRL officials shared in this regard that they are set to commence the task of setting up shopping malls in the important CMRL stations like Chennai, Egmore, St, Thomas Mount, etc., shortly. They have also planned to construct new buildings neighbouring the Ekkattuthangal and Arumbakkam CMRL Stations and rent them out. These buildings are meant to be the space for offices and shopping malls. These buildings will be under the group along with station administration.
In the 1st Phase of this plan, CMDA has approved the plan to construct the buildings adjacent to the Ekkattuthangal CMRL station.
CMRL has started efforts to set up shopping malls in other stations as well.
Once the CMRL service starts between Chennai central, Egmore, and the Airport, the number of passengers is likely to swell to 2 lakhs daily.
