Bridging the digital divide - Wi-Fi services over Southern Railway

Railway Stations are places where cross-section of the society converges. The quickening pace of modernisation and manifold increase in smart phone usage has triggered a ‘Digital India’ revolution.Envisaged in 2015 Rail Budget, Railwire Internet is a joint project by Google and the state-owned telecom infrastructure provider RailTel that aims to bring free Wi-Fi access to railway stations across India. Indian Railways, in its efforts to keep abreast of times, has been fast-tracking provision of Wi-Fi facilities at railway stations pan-India.

Southern Railway, a passenger-friendly zone, has been endeavouring to provide modern facilities to rail users. So far, 23 major railway stations over Southern Railway viz. Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Nungambakkam, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Tiruchchirappalli, Madurai, Rameswaram, Arakkonam, Katpadi, Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, Coonoor, Udagamandalam, Kozhikkode, Mangalore, Thrisur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram Central have been provided with free Wi-Fi facilities.Works for providing free Wi-Fi are in progress at 26 more stations.

Benefits of Railwire Wi-Fi

The Railwire Wi-Fi facility is very user friendly. To switch on the connection, passengers need to scan Wi-Fi options and choose Railwire. Once the browser takes the user to the Railwire portal, it will ask for a mobile number to which a one Time Password (OTP) will be sent. Once connected, the Wi-Fi connection will last for 30 minutes. This seamless connectivity benefits the users to stream high definition videos and download movies besides facilitating uninterrupted browsing.
