The price of tomato has come down quite steeply in the Chennai following the additional truckloads arriving at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market. Tomato now sells at Rs. 5 per kg.
In the retail shops, including areas like Jam Bazaar, the tomato is sold st Rs. 8 to Rs. 12 per kg.
In the farm green shops of the Cooperative Societies, the tomato is sold at Rs.12 per kg.
The president of the Kyambedu tomato traders’ association, M. Thiagarajan, shared the information that since the monsoon failed in the southern states last year, the yield of tomato was much lower in the states of Karnataka and Andhra, So, the truckloads of tomato arriving at Koyambedu was much less. Hence, the price of tomato was up and during August, it was sold a Rs. 50 per kg.
In this situation, this year, the monsoon season did not fail – there were good rains in the Southwest monsoon rainy season in the southern states. The yield this time was much better. Because of this, an additional number of truckloads of tomato have started arriving in the Chennai wholesale vegetable markets.
During August, only 40 truckloads of tomato arrived daily. Now, this has increased to 80 truckloads. Subsequently, the price of tomato has come down to Rs. 5 per kg. The traders could not add any margin on this – so they are presently incurring losses on sales of tomato.
