It was in the year 1944 Poondi reservoir was first built across Kosathalaiyar River and is located at about 60 kms from Chennai. The news is Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh has arrived at this Poondi reservoir. It must be noted that at zero point in Uthukottai in Tamil Nadu this Krishna water entered and later it travelled about 25 kms and it reached Poondi.
According to a senior WRD official the 20 cusecs of water had reached this Poondi reservoir. He also spoke about how this amount of water would not be able to make any difference in the reservoirs storage level.
One important piece of news is the combined storage level of all the four major reservoirs Redhills, Poondi, Cholavaram and Chembarambakkam stands at 43% of their total capacity that is 11257 million cubic feet and this is inspite of Chennai receiving heavy rains last year.
It is important to mention that the combined level measured on Tuesday was 4938mcft and last year around at the same time the level was measured as 1666 mcft. It is now said that water from the Poondi reservoir would be channelled to Redhills treatment plant and later it would be distributed to water distribution grid. The good news is few parts belonging to Central Chennai would get good benefit. If water supply is increased there then other parts of Chennai would also get benefitted.
It must be noted that in the past an agreement was signed between the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and Chennai was supposed to get 12,000mcft of water every year. The agreement also stated that between the months of July and October Chennai must receive 8000mcft of water.
It is now revealed that supply of Krishna water would increase the storage levels in the reservoirs but there are still some doubts regarding the supply of water to the Chennai city.
