In Thirukkadaiyur near Mayiladudurai in the state of Tamil Nadu is situated a famous temple of Lord Shiva. This Amritagateswarar temple has got great history and is visited by huge number of people.
It is worthy to note that this famous temple has got superb associations with Lord Shiva saving his ardent devotee Markandeya from dying. Moreover this temple has also got associations with famous Abirami Pattar a saint who is great devotee of Goddess Abhirami. The main deities in this temple are Lord Amritagateswarar and Goddess Abhirami.
Situated on 10 acres of land this temple with the presence of two huge gopurams and huge mandapas is a great sight for the visitors. The eastern gopuram is of the height of 46 metres and has got as many as 11 storeys.
It was in the 9th century this temple was constructed and the popular Chola Dynasty played huge role in this regard. Later Tanjore based Nayaks did superb work in expanding the temple further.
It is important to note that Devas needed a place to consume Amrita got from Samudra and the pot containing this Amrita was brought to this place. It is revealed that the Devas did not pray Lord Ganesha before having this Amrita and hence Lord Ganesh became angry and he hid the pot in Thirukkadaiyur. It is also said that Lord Ganesha made a Shiva linga and even poured Amrita over that. From then on this temple came to be known as known as Amrita Ghat Eswarar temple.
It is great that in this place Kari Nayanar and Kungili Nayanar attained freedom from birth and death cycle and Appars, Sundarars and Thirugnana Sambandhars have sung songs about this fabulous temple.
This temple is opened from 6 am to 1 pm and then from 4 pm to 9 pm on all days and during the margazhi season this temple would be opened as early as from 4:30 am itself.
