The central government has been conducting NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) throughout the country for the candidates seeking admission to join the medical courses in colleges/universities. It is explained that NEET has been introduced mainly with the view to prevent the private medical colleges from charging exorbitant fees and earning extraordinary profits and also to improve the quality of education.

However, as NEET is based on CBSE syllabus, students who study under the state government syllabus are greatly affected. Especially, the students from the rural areas encounter great difficulties to undertake NEET. So, the political parties in Tamil Nadu objected very strongly to this. Even the Tamil Nadu government raised objections. It appealed for exemption from NEET. The central government acceded and gave exemption just for 1 year for the state of Tamil Nadu alone. But the subsequent year NEET was conducted in Tamil Nadu as well and the medical admissions were based on the NEET performance.

In this scenario, CBSE has announced that NEET for 2018 is scheduled to be conducted on 6th May. It has also informed that exemption has been given to the 2 institutions – AIIMS and JIPMER.

Information was gathered that the central government had been examining the possibility of including the state government syllabus while setting the NEET question paper. However, it is to be noted that there have been no changes so far in the NEET syllabus for this year.
