Chitlapakkam is now in the news. This residential locality is famous for green environment, availability of water and it is close to OMR is well known. The latest news is the residents living in this Chitlapakkam now want to have separate municipality.

It is now revealed that the residents of this residential locality are tired as they have waited patiently for the government to provide them basic civic amenities.

It is worthy to note that on Thursday 25th January 2018 the residents of this place petitioned chief minister and the residents demanded for a separate municipality and that could be done by merging local bodies lying in southern periphery of greater Chennai Corporation.

Initiation of a policy discussion on the creation of one or more municipal corporations in the CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area was demanded by the representative of the Chitlapakkam Residents Association Coordination Committee, Mr. P. Viswanathan in his petition to the chief minister of TN.

It is important to mention here that currently the Greater Chennai Corporation is the one and only urban local body within CMA to have municipal corporation status and that is superb.

Mr Viswanathan expressed his thoughts and said that area of Chitlapakkam is only 2.95 sq km and places like Tambaram, Pallavaram etc near it are all municipalities. He also spoke about how Chitlapakkam is still a town panchayat despite of fast urbanization in this locality.

He further highlighted that Chitlapakkam’s urbanization was not recognised and this had resulted in the non provision of basic amenities and he also cited the examples of drinking water connections and underground sewage network. Mr. Viswanathan further added that the residents in this Chitlapakkam locality do not get 70 litres of drinking water per person per day but they are entitled to receive that.

It is worthy to note that daily 27 lakh litres of drinking water must be supplied and TWAD supplies only 9 lakh litres.
