Lord Swaminatha Swamy temple of Swamimalai

Lord Swaminatha Swamy temple is located in Swamimalai in the district of Thanjavur and this temple is one of the six arupadai veedu of Lord Muruga. It is about 250 kms from Chennai.

Located along the banks of River Cauvery this superb temple is visited by many devotees from all over. The main deity is Lord Muruga or Swaminatha and is located at the top of hill of height 18metres. Presence of 60 stone steps indicates Hindu cycle of 60 calender years. Thiruveragam is another name given to this place of Lord Muruga.

It must be noted that Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi temples are present downhill and it is said that Lord Muruga explained the meaning of pranava mantra ‘OM’ to his father Lord Shiva here.

It is revealed that famous saint Bhrugu got a boon that person disturbing his penance or thavam would lose their knowledge. Fire came out of the head of this saint during his penance and the fire reached till the heaven. The frightened devas sought the help of Lord Shiva who placed his hand on the head of the saint Bhrugu. As result of this action Lord Shiva he lost his knowledge. After learning the pranava matra from Lord Muruga, Lord Shiva regained all his knowledge. One important piece of information is Goddess Bhudevi was relieved from Goddess Parvati’s curse as Goddess Bhudevi worshipped Lord Murugan . Goddess Bhudevi transformed into a gooseberry tree and lived here in the temple.

It is worthy to note that in this temple of Lord Muruga many festivals are conducted. Few examples are kiruthkai festival, temple car festival plus others like visakam festival etc. Daily there are as many as six rituals performed in this temple

This temple is opened daily for the devotees from morning 6am to 1pm and from evening 4pm to 9pm.
