The state government of Tamil Nadu announced an upward revision in all the government transport corporation buses last month.

As the increase in the fares announced was very steep, there were strong protests and objections from the public and the politicians. Protests were also organised.

Subsequent to the vehement public reaction and strong protests, the state government announced that it would reduce the fares and accordingly, it announced a reduction of Re.1 per stage in the bus routes. Dissatisfied with this, the opposition parties have announced protests,

Meanwhile, the state transport minister M. R. Vijayabhaskar informed that there is no change in the monthly bus-pass fare of Rs. 1000 and the other bus-passes with the revised fares would be distributed shortly.

In this situation, the weekly and monthly bus-passes with revised fare are being distributed from today (Thursday, 8th February) in Chennai. The weekly bus-pass fare has been increased from Rs. 240 to Rs. 320. The monthly bus-pass fare has been increased from Rs. 280 to Rs. 370.

The new bus-passes are under distribution. The monthly bus-pass of Rs, 1000, with the ‘travel-as-you-please’ mode, is also being distributed without any change in the cost.

Apart from Chennai, the new bus-passes with revised fares are being distributed in other cities as well. However, the fare for 20 days is collected and the monthly bus-pass is given.
