National Deworming Day is being held on 10th February 2018 across India. It is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India where all children between the ages of 1-19 years of age will be targeted to receive deworming medicines against parasitic intestinal worms. Columbia Asia Hospital plans to promote hygiene habits by conducting camps in the government schools of Varthur and Whitefield areas educating the students, their teachers on the deworming program and its importance in the development of the children. Columbia Asia Hospitals will send SMS messages to all parents of children enrolled with them, to bring their children to hospital for the deworming and also a participatory educational program by pediatricians on how to prevent worm infestations and effects on worm infestation on child health, well-being and nutritional status.

The World Health Organization has a mission to eliminate morbidity due to worms in children before 2020. Worms causing diseases are Hook worm, Whip worm, Round worm, Tape worm and worm infestation spreads because of poor sanitation and hygiene, contact with infected soil and contaminated water causing serious harm as worms are parasites which live on nutrition from human digestive system leading to anemia, malnutrition, fatigue, impaired physical and intellectual development.

Speaking about the importance of deworming, Dr. Senthil Kumar said “worm infestation is a very serious problem, which affects children and shunts the growth and development of the children. Prevention of worm infestation by Deworming medication is very important”. Apart from this, children should keep nails short and clean, drink clean water, maintain surroundings clean, wear footwear outside the home, thoroughly cleanse fruits and vegetables, wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.

De-worming medicines rarely have any side effect like some children may have nausea, mild abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea. growth rate and weight gain of children who are regularly de-wormed is pretty higher than who those who aren’t. Hence regular deworming is the best solution for many of the childhood illnesses.

WHY NATIONAL DEWORMING DAY IS OBSERVED

National Deworming Day is observed in our country to reduce the cases of worm infections among kids. Children are the future of the nation; they must be healthy and happy in all the sense. National Deworming Day is a big initiative campaign run by the government of India (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) to make people aware about worm infections, its impact on the health, prevention and curing the infection through deworming tablets.
