For example, when the medicine paracetamol is bought as a brand product in a pharmacy, a card-pack of 15 tablets costs Rs. 47 after discount. However, if the same paracetamol is ought as a generic medicine, it will cost only Rs. 17 after a 40% discount. This is a considerable saving.
What is a generic medicine?
A medicine can be a product of a single chemical or as a mix of several chemicals. Though the basic constituents of a particular medicine are same, different pharmaceutical companies manufacture the same in different names and sell them. They fix the price of their branded medicine based on the manufacturing cost, research, patent protection, and marketing costs.
However, when generic medicines are manufactured, the factors of expenses for research, patent protection, and marketing are not considered. So, the generic medicines are relatively sold at cheaper prices.
