The latest news is movement of vehicles on the stretches between Poonamallee and Sriperumbudur along the Chennai - Bengaluru national highway would soon become smooth. The reason for that being the six- lane elevated expressway project work that would begin soon.
It is worthy to mention that this project’s main objective was to reduce the traffic congestion between Poonamallee and Sriperumbudur and the project has been on paper only till now.
The good news is NHAI or National Highway Authority of India has floated tenders for this project and it is estimated to cost amount of Rs 2165.27 crores. It is clear that in this project 13.7 km 6 lane elevated expressway to link Chennai outer ring road at Nemilicheri with Sriperumbudur is being planned. It must be noted that this elevated project is an extension of Bengaluru- Chennai Expressway.
Starting at Hoskote in Bengaluru this proposed Bengaluru- Chennai expressway would finish at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and it would be of a distance of 264 km.
As per the official sources faster traffic movement between express highway and Chennai outer ring road through Poonamallee would be possible with the six- lane elevated project.
By means of 42km elevated corridor, elevated express highway would link Chennai Port with Sriperumbudur and this would be done after elevated expressway project of 18.3 km between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal.
Mr HM. Naqvi who is regional officer, Chennai spoke about how a detailed project report is being prepared now by a consultancy. He also spoke about how this detailed report would have Maduravoyal connecting Nazarethpet for constructing 11 km elevated highway. He explained that by means of an elevated road Chennai port and Sriperumbudur would be connected.
Through this Chennai - Bengaluru national highway as many as 75000 vehicles travel everyday and is one of the busiest stretches in India. Traffic congestion would be reduced once when the elevated express highway work gets completed.
The official further spoke about how the travel time would be reduced by this express highway and he further hinted that vehicles would be able to move at speeds close to 100 kmph.
It is now brought out that under the EPC or Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract model this project work would be completed in two and half years time. Maintaining of the road by the contact company would be for a time period of four years.
It is confirmed by an official that work would start as soon the formalities are completed and the project is in the initial stages now.
