Posted on: 24/Feb/2018 3:55:29 PM
It has been announced that 44 centres would be set up throughout Tamil Nadu for conducting online counseling for admission to engineering courses.

Until now, the single-window counselling system conducted at the Chennai Anna University Complex was in vogue for admission of students to the engineering courses B. E., B. Tech., and B. Arch.

However, from the coming academic year, commencing June 2018, the department of education has decided to commence counseling and admission online.

The minister for higher education, K. P. Anbazhagan, informed that a decision has been taken to conduct only online counselling for the students. So, the students can apply from their own personal computers from their homes and select the preferred college and the course.

Thos who have difficulty in operating computers or those who do not have internet facility including the rural students, 44 counselling assistance centres are to be set up throughout the state.

The 44 counselling assistance centres will function in the government engineering colleges, member colleges of Anna University, government polytechnics, government arts and science colleges. A counselling assistance centre will be set up in each district. In the larger districts, 2 centres will be set up. However, no private engineering colleges will be associated with these centres.

Guides will be available in these counselling assistance centres. With their help, the students can complete the formalities including the choice of subject and college.

The centres will also have the facility to apply online. With this facility, the single-window counselling system, which was functioning in the last 21 years, comes to a close.

The dates for counselling, the dates of commencement and conclusion of registration of applications, the dates of offering assistance counselling, and the dates of release of ‘Random numbers’ and merit list will be announced shortly.

The guidance for counselling will be offered by Anna University.

Handbooks continuing the details of the colleges will be given to the candidates on the date of document verification. The names of the colleges, their registration numbers, district, etc., can be obtained from the handbook. Further, guidance on how to approach counselling, the model procedure for filling up the application, etc., will soon be uploaded/released on the official website of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Council.

The member-secretary of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Students Admission Committee explained:

Arrangements are being made to make the online counselling absolutely smooth and trouble-free. In the 1st stage, the date of application registration will be announced. The students can apply either from their homes or from the government counselling centres.

Each student must be ready with the User ID and the secret code number from the website of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Council. Each activity of the application will be recorded online. The students can know details through their User IDs.

After the registration of applications, they will be scrutinized and document verification will be completed. Those who applied from their r homes need to come to the counselling assistance centre for the document verification. Even those who applied in the counselling service centres need to come for the document verification session with the original certificates.

Subsequently, the random numbers and the merit list confirming the mark/merit list will be released one after the other. The students would be divided into 5 groups as per the merit list and online counselling will be done. Each student will have 5 days of counselling activities.

During the 1st 3 days, the student has to register the preferred college and subject online.  In the preference list, the students can pick from the list shown n the computer as per their priority order.

For the 1st to 3rd days, up to 6.00 PM on the 3rd day, 66 hours would be given for registration as preferred.

On the 3rd day evening, the page of preferences will be locked. On the same night, the engineering committee will offer the tentative allotment of seat online. The students will need to check this on the 4th day and confirm the same online.

On the 5th day, the tentative seat offered will be confirmed and a digital allotment order will be issued. Candidates who received an allotment can cancel it. However, they cannot participate in the counselling again.

As per the days allotted for the students based on the merit list, the names of the students who did not participate in the counselling will be taken to the next round as per the merit list. In the next round, the applicant can choose the colleges which have seats to offer.
