The news that south based coastal districts belonging to the state of Tamil Nadu have experienced heavy thunder showers since Tuesday 13th March 2018 midnight has been the subject for discussion for many now.
Due to the rough weather more than 7000 country crafts plus 1200 mechanised boats refrained from fishing in the coastal districts of Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli.
The sad news is around 250 fishermen who went into the sea in the district of Kanyakumari did not return back.
Thoothukudi district received total rainfall of 1060.8mm and the city of Thoothukudi received 200.8 mm of rainfall and this data was taken during the last 24 hours till 8 am on Wednesday 14th March 2018.
On Wednesday 14th March the average rainfall received in Thoothukudi was measured as 55.83 mm and average rainfall in the district of Kanyakumari was measured as 66 mm. District of Tirunelveli recorded lowest amongst the three and it was 27.87 mm of rainfall. The heavy rainfall in Tirunelveli resulted in the water level increase in the Servaluru dam and also in the Papanasam dam.
According to an official from fisheries department out of total 600 mechanised boats that went into the sea for fishing 550 boats returned back. This official further threw light on the safe arrival of 30 more boats and it is now said that in the harbours of Kochi as many as 21 boats landed, 2 boats landed in Alikal in Kerala plus seven boats landed safely in Thengaipattnam in Kanyakumari district. Search for other 20 boats is going on now.
