Depression is one of the major health problem people in this world get affected these days. Many people sleep having small lights or night lamps switched on in their bedrooms. It is now said that these people might get affected by this depression problem.

Research activities were carried on as many as 863 elderly persons with an average age of 72 years. This research work was done by Dr Kenji Obayashi and was carried out for a period of 2 years on the above people. It must be noted that these people did not have any depressive issues in the beginning.

As many as 710 persons slept in dark room and the rest were exposed to light during their bedtime at night. Light meters were placed at the heads of everyone’s bed and that was done to calculate the amount of light the persons subjected to this research would see while going to sleep.

Sleep diaries were maintained by the people who took part in the research activity and were checked for the development of depressive symptoms.

It is surprising to mention here that people exposed to more than 5 lumens of light during the night had high risk of developing depression and this is more when compared to those who slept in dark.
