A new system has been introduced to facilitate payment of penalties/fines imposed on violation of traffic rules in the Post Offices through the E-challan scheme.

The traffic police impose fines on the vehicle drivers for violations of traffic rules such as over-speed, stopping the vehicle crossing the ‘stop line’, driving the vehicle while talking on the cell phone, 3-persons riding on 2-wheelers, etc.

The Departments of Traffic and Posts have joined to introduce the new scheme to facilitate the payment of penalties/fines in the nearest post Offices through E-challans.

The Postal Department has sent circulars to implement this scheme in the districts of Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy.

A senior superintendent of the Postal Department in Coimbatore explained regarding this:

The traffic police will issue E-challans to the public who violate the traffic rules and regulations. This E-challan will carry the details of the number, name, vehicle number, and the licence number. The concerned individual can take this to the nearest Post office and pay the fine presenting the E-challan.

For the penalties/fines below Rs. 1000, the Postal Department has been instructed to collect an additional Rs. 5. For fines in the range Rs. 1001 – Rs. 2500, Rs. 10 will be collected. For the fine range Rs. 2500 – Rs. 5000, it will be Rs, 15. For fines over Rs, 5000, an additional amount of Rs. 20 will be collected.

The task of creating User IDs for the traffic police in Coimbatore is in progress. The new system will be implemented soon.
