The Chennai Metro Rail project authorities have planned to complete the work on the Washermanpet-Tiruvottiyur section before the end of next year (2019).
The Chennai Metro Rail authorities further informed that the work is in progress to complete the set up of the underground Metro Railway stations.
The former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, laid the foundation stone for the project for the 1st Phase Extension of the section between Chennai Washermanpet and Tiruvottiyur.
This covers a distance of 9 km and there are 8 metro Stations planned in this route.
The construction of the Railway Stations is in progress at Sir Theagaraya College, Korukkuppettai, Tondiarpet, Tollgate, Thangal, Gowri Ashram, Tiruvottiyur, and Wimco nagar.
A Chennai Metro Rail Project official explained in this regard:
Under the expansion project of Chennai Metro Rail, work is in progress at a cost of Rs. 3700 Crores. The tunneling work in this section is nearing completion and the construction of Railway Stations has commenced.
The work is being undertaken with due consideration of the public safety and security. Care has also been taken to avoid unnecessary expenses and keeping the project cost under control.
Thus, we expect the project activities in this section to be completed before the end of the next year and start the public services immediately after that.
