Prathap C.Reddy, the Founder of First Corporate Chain Hospitals in India

Apollo Hospitals Group - there could hardly be anyone who doesn’t know the chain of hospitals belonging to their group! But do you know the man behind all these? It is Mr. Prathap Chandra Reddy, a cardiologist. He is ranked in position-48 in the list of India’s most powerful people, 2017. Let’s dig deeper into his background.
What is his background?
Back in 1991, Reddy had grabbed the prestigious Padma Bhushan award and in 2010, he was given the second-highest civilian award – Padma Vibhushan. He is the father of 4 daughters who are Preetha Reddy, Suneta Reddy, Shobana Kamineni and Sangeetha Reddy all of whom are Directors at Apollo Hospitals.
Dr Reddy completed his premedical degree from Madras Christian College and obtained medical degree from Stanley Medical College, Chennai. After his Fellowship from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA, he took up research programs at Missouri State Chest Hospital. Accepting his dad’s request, Reddy returned to India, quitting his practice abroad. With that, it was in 1983 that he had set up Apollo Hospital first in Chennai. Well, back in those days – in the period of 80s, it wasn’t too easy to set up a private enterprise. Only small physician-owned nursing homes were popular among the public, and not private healthcare institutions. Dr Reddy however aimed at delivering impeccable treatment solution the public and he still does.
