Metro rail is being used by people as one of their means of transportation to reach their destinations. The news now is there has been sudden increase in the number of passengers using this metro rail and this has made many metro rail officials happy.

In the last week as many as 28000 commuters have used this metro rail and this is 4000 to 6000 more than in the past. It is known that usually 22000 to 24000 people use this metro rail.

This increase in the number of commuters using metro rail was seen in the last week only and this was confirmed by an official belonging to CMRL.

The official spoke about how the exact reason for this increase in the number of passengers opting for metro rail is not clear. One reason that is said now is parents are taking their kids for joy rides in these metro trains in the summer and that might have increased the number.

The important piece of information is Nehru Park, Chennai airport and CMBT metro rail stations are now popular entry and exit points for these new commuters. The exact figures on the numbers for these stations are not available as of now.

An official of CMRL hinted that many commuters going to airport and others going to places from CMBT find metro trains easy and convenient when compared to other means of transportation now.

In the next month Chennai Central metro rail station plus Chennai Egmore metro rail station would be opened and more number of passengers would use metro trains to reach their destinations. This was also confirmed by an official of CMRL now.

It was some three years back Chennai metro rail’s first service between places Koyambedu and Alandur was started and the number of commuters at that time was 8000 to 10000.

Later more number of passengers started using these metro rails when connectivity was extended to Chennai airport.

The number of commuters using metro trains rose to 22000 last year after underground stretch was opened between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park.

It is now revealed that improving last mile connectivity by means of small buses would make more number of people use this metro rail.
