New light in cancer treatment

Apollo Hospitals is set to buy a new machine that will help control cancer cells in the body. The treatment called proton therapy is a kind of radiation that uses protons to kill the DNA of the cancer cells. This facility will come up on Old Mahabalipuram Road and is slated to be ready by 2015.
Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman of Apollo Hospitals said, “For children this is the choice. It (proton therapy) could be used to treat lesions in young, delicate areas like the spine and eye. At present, it requires Rs. 1.5 crore to go the US for treatment but the new centre will bring down the cost of treatment.”
