The activities related to the 2nd Phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project are set to commence in July.
The officials have informed that the Metro Rail Service will be operative from DMS to Chennai Washermanpet.
In the 1st Phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, 35 km of the planned services are now in operation. Work has been completed in 2 corridors. The service is intended to cover the important busy locations like Koyambedu, Central, Egmore, and the Airport. In order to create public awareness, free travel was allowed for 5 days.
The Metro rails operated following International guidelines of safety in travel. Escalators and walking pavements have been set up at required places. 50 CCTV cameras have been installed in each Metro Station for monitoring.
Arrangements have been to handle in case of any fire accidents and also for automatic removal of stagnant water. Special emergency exit roads made at every 200 metres for the public to use during any emergencies.
As per the present routine, a daily revenue of Rs. 10 Lakhs is collected from the passengers and a daily revenue of Rs. 1 Lakh through parking of vehicles. As new sections of service have been started, this revenue is expected to go up further.
A smart card facilitating travel in all travel modes – Metro, Electric Trains, and MTC buses are likely to be introduced on a trial basis in 1 or 2 months.
The Metro service between Washermanpet and DMS will commence before the end of the year. The project between Washermanpet and Tiruvottiyur will be completed by March 2020. When all projects are completed, around 8 lakh passengers will travel daily in Metro Rail.
The details of the 2nd Phase of the Metro Rail project have been submitted to the central government. Approval from the central government is expected in the next month. Tenders have already been floated and the selection of the contracting companies is in progress. So, it is expected the 2nd Phase of Metro Rail Project is set to commence in July
