Sweat is natural for all of us and we all sweat after running, walking, doing other physical activities etc. This sweating or perspiration is the fluid secreted by our sweat glands present in the skin. There are 2 types of sweat glands in our body and they are eccrine glands and apocrine glands. Sometimes we sweat excessively and this condition is termed as hyperhidrosis.
This condition must be considered seriously as it could be highly embarrassing for us. It is said that this hyperhidrosis issue could disrupt normal activities of a person. This excessive sweating could be found in hands, feet, underarms etc in those having this health condition.
There are few treatments that are available for this excessive sweating issue and they are
Using antiperspirants: By using antiperspirants it is easy and highly effective to overcome this excessive sweating in us. The presence of aluminium salts in the antiperspirants play an important role by forming a plug that blocks perspiration. In the market there are many antiperspirants sold in combination with deodorant and our body smell could be kept in control by this.
Iontophoresis: This is also another way to overcome this excessive sweating issue. This method involves sitting with our hands, feet in a shallow tray of water for a time of half an hour. An electric current passes through water. In this sweat gets blocked and is prevented from getting to the skin surface. This procedure is repeated for few times in a week to get better results. It is said that pregnant woman plus those with epilepsy and cardiac issues should not undergo this procedure.
Botulinum toxin or botox: We all know that botox treatment is done to remove wrinkles etc. Not many of us are aware that this could be used to treat excessive sweating in us. In this procedure, botox injections are given to treat excessive under arm sweating. It is important to mention that botox prevents release of chemical that signals sweat glands to activate and produce excessive sweating in us.
Intake of anticholinergic drugs: This is an oral process where intake of anticholinergic drugs could stop activation of the sweat glands in us. This treatment for excessive sweating could lead to issues such as palpitations, urinary issues and blurred vision etc.
Surgical method: Severe forms of hyperhidrosis are sometimes present in persons and they undergo surgery to overcome this issue. Cutting, scraping and suctioning of sweat glands are carried out in this surgical process. If all these treatments are not effective then finally nerve present in armpits which activates sweat glands are cut. This procedure is called as ETS or Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy. This ETS must be used as the last resort only as it has side effects like compensatory sweating etc.
