Morning walkers can heave a sigh as the Chennai City Police have banned use of vehicles on Loop Road, off Kamarajar Salai between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m.
As a move to ease morning walkers, this new system to prohibit vehicle traffic along Marina Loop Road is introduced from Monday. This shall make sure that the stretch remains free from pollution and hassles for the comfort of morning walkers, says M.C. Sarangan, the Additional Commissioner of Police, South.
A.k. Viswanathan, the City Police Commissioner had been receiving several complaints in this regard where morning walkers meet with accidents very often. As per police reports, about 5000 people use this road that runs for along 2 km to go for morning walk.
With the new restriction, the stretch between Chennai Coffee House and Slum Clearance Board which is called the Loop Road will have vehicular traffic shut between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. So, this stretch will be available for parking for all the beachgoers and walkers during morning hours. Vehicles can also be parked in front of Slum Clearance Board at the Mattankuppam junction.
As a move to ensure proper enforcement of this rule, police personnel shall keep going on patrol. Furthermore, they affirm that there will be no chances in terms of traffic movement along arterial Kamarajar Road.
This stretch is often used for learning driving. In addition, a lot of youngsters and enthusiasts play football here which are threatening to the morning walkers. While banning vehicles during the early hours of the day is definitely a welcome move, there are nuisance even during evening times when there are a lot of people walking along. Hence, restrictions are also to be imposed during evening times, says a morning walker.
